Fire Safety
On 17th October 2009 in a residential apartment on 14th floor in Thane, India; a fire broke on the eve of Diwali. As a standard protocol, the residents called the local fire department. The fire fighters arrived in time. All the residents had already evacuated the building. The fire fighters rushed to the site to extinguish the fire & avoid further mishap.
Unfortunately the first 6 firefighters who came to help somehow, took the elevator to reach the 14th floor where the apartment was ablaze. And in this same elevator that got stuck somewhere on its way to the 14th floor, all of these men lost their lives due to smoke inhalation & subsequent suffocation.
Although the fire was brought in control by the next batch of firefighters, nobody could even realize that these 6 men are missing, until the whole saga was over.
Now, we may never know why these men chose to use the elevator in case of fire. Now, may things will be said, many flaws will be visible & pointed out. But is it always necessary that the system, people should improve only after a tragic incident?
All of us cannot be highly trained life savers, but we can at least have the basic knowledge of some of the common hazards, the preventive measures & important dos and don’ts in case any hazard culminates into a disaster along with the basic training in life saving skills like first aid, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (artificial breathing technique). Here are some of the important things to remember:
• Never to use elevator in case of fire & earthquake. The power cuts can trap the people inside, further endangering the lives with the possibility of suffocation due to smoke.
• In case of smoke/ fire, evacuate & go away from that place as fast as possible.
• In case of smoke, cover your mouth & nose preferably with wet cloth/ handkerchief and crawl or creep to avoid the inhalation of smoke.
• In case your clothes catch fire, immediately drop on the ground & start rolling to extinguish the fire.
• DO NOT cling to any person in case you have caught fire.
• Completely extinguish all the fires especially household burning candles, stoves etc.
• Keep the igniting material like match box etc. out of reach of children.
• Periodically check & replace the electric wiring in the house.
• In case of smell or sight of smoke, evacuate the place & notify the authorities/ officials about the possibility of fire.
• Whenever you are at a public gathering place like a shopping mall or multiplex, make sure that you have studied the emergency evacuation map of that place & have identified the mergency exits.
• Learn the basics of first aid & Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (artificial breathing technique).
These are just a few of the basics regarding fire safety. But the most important thing to remember is always to be aware of the safety of your environment & surroundings in which you are living.
Be Safe!!!
